Based on a holistic approach to healing that emphasizes the relationship between the body and mind, Japanese yoga exercises -- Shin-shin-toitsu-du -- focus on the development and balance of ki, the Japanese word for the body’s life energy. Practitioners of Shin-shin-toitsu-du, developed by Nakamura Tempu Sensei, integrate gentle physical movements with mental exercises to develop willpower and self-awareness and foster physical and mental health. Students of Japanese yoga should begin their practice slowly and gradually increase the frequency and intensity over time.

Origin of Japanese Yoga

Japanese adopted Yoga and in-cultured it as Shin-shin-toitsu-du and Jiko Anji.

According to H.E. Davey, author of "Japanese Yoga: The Way of Dynamic Meditation,” the practice of Shin-shin-toitsu-du is a synthesis of the cumulative experience and studies of its founder, Nakamura Sensei. Under the tutelage of an Indian yogi, Nakamura Sensei learned that the body is a reflection of a person’s thoughts and emotions. Based on his conclusion that the mind and body are one, Nakamura began to teach a series of physical, mental and spiritual exercises designed to guide students to improved health and spiritual enlightenment.

Autosuggestions of Japanese Yoga

Similar to the practice of positive affirmations, Jiko Anji is a method of introducing positive suggestions to replace the negative thoughts and beliefs held in the subconscious mind. Because Nakamura Sensei believed the mind was most vulnerable to suggestion just before sleep, he encouraged students to keep a hand-held mirror near their bed, and speak a single, positive suggestion to their image just before falling asleep. For best results, repeat the process as soon as you wake in the morning, and several times throughout the day.

Meditation of Japanese Yoga

The Muga Ichi-nen and Anjo Daza Ho meditations use sight and sound, respectively, to achieve a calm mind and greater willpower. To practice the Anjo Daza Ho, adapt the seiza posture by sitting on your feet and placing your hands in the lap with your index fingers lightly touching your thumbs. Close your eyes and concentrate on the sounds of a ringing bell. Practice the Muga Ichi-nen in the same position while gazing into the flame of a lighted candle.

Self-Healing Exercises of Japanese Yoga

Japanese yoga exercises, known as Hitori Ryoho, encompass healing techniques for the entire body, including the back, shoulders, limbs, face, mouth and eyes. To promote healing and stimulate your hara, or power center, place your right palm on your navel and cover it with your left hand. Gradually move your hands in a clockwise pattern to enhance circulation and improve your digestion.

  1. I’m pretty self-conscious about my looks, and I have a slight “belly”, but not much of one. I’m 15, about 5’3″, and about 123lbs. I eat ok, I mean, I have a snack now and then, but it’s usually a cheese stick (string cheese), or fruit, or light and fit yogurt, or a nutrigrain bar (apple–cinnamon). I tend to eat dessert, not every night, but I still eat it, but I can’t help it! I like ice cream (I just got this new Yankees ice cream, we’re gonna see if we win Yankees tickets, and I did not get the ice cream for that, and I only open it for Yankees games, and it’s DELICIOUS! BTW: The Yankees won against the red sux 2/3 games, 2 games out of a 3-game set ^.^). Sometimes for dessert, I have fruit, or mochi ice cream (Japanese ice cream), if we have it, and we get it at this health food store called “Whole Foods”, so I’m guessing it’s a little better for you then regular ice cream, but then again, it comes in very small portions. I also have hot chocolate sometimes (and with lots of whipped cream, light whipped cream to be more exact, and my mom won’t get me marshmallows anymore because I’m kinda an addict, lol), even though it’s spring. I have lunch almost every day in school, but I usually have cafeteria food (and for crappy cafeteria food, they make pretty good mozzarella sticks, but you have to get there quick before they’re gone), but when I don’t have mozzarella sticks, I have chicken fingers w/fries (it doesn’t come just as chicken fingers, it comes with the fries in the same container), or just fries when I don’t have much money. Sometimes I bring my own food, like today, I had sushi from Wegman’s. I also had a soda from the company “Goya”. When I eat lunch at home, I usually just make some easy mac, or ramen, or a sandwich like a BLT, or grilled cheese, and sometimes I have french toast for breakfast (on weekends, I don’t have enough time in the morning before school to have breakfast), and sometimes a pop tart. I just got some frosted cheerios, and those are pretty good.
    As far as exercise goes, I’m cooped up in the house most of the day, and not able to go outside (or at least when my mom’s not home, but she works a lot, so, yeah), I mean, I can probably like, dance in my room or something. I do love to dance, especially to ♪♥The Beatles♥♫! Lady Madonna is such a great song to dance to! So is She Loves You! And I’m Down. Love those songs! And, I actually am a really good dancer. Ask my former dance teachers!
    Also, I make REALLY good chocolate chip cookies (ask my brother’s friends in college =D). So, when I make the dough, it’s so tasty! And when the cookies are fresh from the oven… YUM!!!! I don’t make them a lot, but I’m probably gonna make ’em soon, and bring them into school (I get extra credit from my teachers because they’re so good XD!), so, yeah.

    So, does anyone have any tips for me on how to lose weight?
