If you have been diagnosed for vaginitis and need a home treatment after every other treatment has failed, it is easier to know about a suitable home remedy for vaginitis from an old lady of your acquaintance or the one living in your neighbourhood who must have suffered from this disease at least once in her youth when home remedies were in common use, and only a few of the common or even the educated folks ever went to a physician for treatment. Home remedies were frequently used by the Indians, Chinese, Native Americans and the other tribes in different parts of the world for their efficacy and natural healing power. Most of such remedies were prepared from plants and herbs. Now, their use has declined with the spread of westernized health care system and the invention of chemically prepared drugs that act fast to give a temporary relief due to their superficial action. That is why the home remedies have their importance in eliminating the health problems permanently by going to their very roots and are still widely used.
We may choose a particular home remedy depending upon its action on a particular organ of the human body. For example, Saw Palmetto has its affinity with the prostrate; Pipsissewa works on bladder and the urethra. Therefore, what matters most is to choose a home remedy that has its affinity with the particular organ of the human body for which it is needed. However, in some cases like vagina which has complex problems having multiple functions, we may try different home remedies for their general action depending upon the type of complaint. Vaginitis is caused by bacterial infection, and we need a remedy that is anti-bacterial in nature.

Home Remedies for Vaginitis
Apple Cider Vinegar
One of the reasons bacterial vaginosis develops is because of an imbalance in the pH levels of your vagina. Since apple cider vinegar is naturally acidic, it can assist in restoring the proper balance between “bad” and “good” bacteria in your body. Apple cider vinegar also has the ability to eliminate bad bacteria because it is antibacterial. You can add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to two cups of water and use the solution to douche once a day until your infection clears. You can also add ½ cup of apple cider vinegar to a bath and soak for about ½ hour.
Tree Tea Oil
Tea tree oil has several properties that can help eliminate bacterial vaginosis. It contains antifungal and antibacterial compounds, as well as a strong “mint-like” odor to help with the smell associated with the infection. If you want to use tea tree oil in your bath, add three drops of it along with three cups of white vinegar to a warm tub of water. Soak for about 30 minutes. You can also fill a small bowl with warm water and mix in a few drops of the oil. Use the mixture to rinse your vagina once a day until your infection clears.
Plain yogurt is rich in probiotic cultures, and a cup of regular intake once a day keeps the bad bacteria under poor survival conditions due to increased acidic level in the vagina.
It relieves burning and itching and considerably relieves bad odour.
This is another good home remedy for vaginitis. However, its application over the vagina at once kills both the bad and the good bacteria. You get an immediate relief. However, whenever there is an unhealthy condition in the vagina during menstruation or whenever there is a lack of proper hygiene due to irregular baths and washing the parts, the bacteria are born again to cause recurring vaginitis.
Neem (Azadirachta Indica)
It is antibacterial, antiseptic and a perfect antibiotic. You can use the fresh or dried leaves and its bark for making the home remedy for vaginitis. Boil about a quarter of a lb. of leaves in half a gallon of water for half an hour and cool it down. You can store it in a bottle outside refrigerator. Put a few spoonful of this water in a bowl and warm it in a Microwave. Soak a cotton swab in this and apply it to vagina a few times replacing the cotton swab each time. This will kill the bacteria, remove foul odour from the vagina and also relieve burning and itching associated with vaginitis.
Milk contains lactobacilli bacteria that make it as an excellent natural cure for bacterial vaginosis. Plus, milk helps strengthen the immune system.
- Dip a tampon in chilled milk and insert it into your vagina. Keep the tampon in for one to two hours and then remove it. Do this once daily for several days to relieve symptoms.
- Alternatively, add one teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk. Drink this mixture once daily until your condition improves.
Margosa is an effective natural cure for bacterial infection. Crush a handful of margosa leaves in some water to form a paste. Apply this paste on your vagina and leave it for some time. Repeat this remedy at least twice a day in order to get relief.
Garlic is a natural antibiotic that can help treat bacterial vaginosis. Also, its antifungal properties will keep the bad bacteria in check.
- Crush three to four garlic cloves. Smear the mashed garlic on the affected area. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse the area with lukewarm water. Follow this remedy once daily for several months.
- Another option is to wrap one garlic clove in gauze and put it in the vagina. Leave it in for not more than half an hour as it can cause soreness. Use this treatment once daily for several days.
- Also, eat garlic in raw or cooked form daily. If you cannot tolerate the taste of garlic, you can opt for garlic capsules after consulting a doctor.
You can apply black walnut tincture to cure bacterial vaginosis. Black walnut has great antiseptic, as well as anti-parasitic properties; therefore, it is effective in healing the infection of the vagina.
Fenugreek is often used to strengthen immune systems and can help balance the pH level of your vagina. It is known as one of many natural home remedies for bacterial vaginosis. Fenugreek is administered orally. There are several ways to consume it. You can mix a teaspoon of fenugreek powder to one cup of yogurt and eat twice a day. If you prefer to drink a solution, you can add one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds to a cup of water. Let the mixture steep for five minutes, strain and add honey to taste. Drink this tea up to 3 times daily.
Soak a tea bag in water and then place it in the refrigerator for a few minutes. Then, place it in your vagina for about 10 minutes. Tea bag gives a soothing relief to the itchiness caused due to bacterial infection.
Drink juices of or eat citrus fruits, such as lemons, grapefruits or oranges. These fruits are abundant in vitamin C and strengthen your immune system to keep you away from all sorts of vaginal infections.
Eat bananas; bananas are also natural home remedies to treat vaginal discharge

A bath with warm water helps to soothe the tissues of the vagina, thereby, preventing pubic and vaginal infection.
Though each of these home remedies is in wide use for vaginitis, you may also try apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil as external applications. These should not be used directly over the vagina in their original composition and should be mixed with one to ten parts of water before use.
